Sarah Palin endorses Dan Bonginos Senate bid

SEVERNA PARK (AP) Maryland Republican Senate candidate Dan Bongino is announcing he has been endorsed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

In a statement released Monday, Palin says political pundits often dismiss conservative candidates who are running in heavily Democratic states. But she says she doesnt believe in ignoring good candidates simply because theyre fighting uphill battles against the odds.

Bongino is a former Secret Service agent who is running against Democratic incumbent Ben Cardin.

Palin, who was Republican Sen. John McCains running mate in 2008, also weighed in on Marylands governors race in 2010, when she endorsed Brian Murphy, who was a lesser-known candidate for the GOP nomination against former Gov. Robert Ehrlich. Ehrlich won the nomination but lost to Democratic Gov. Martin OMalley in the general election.

Western Md. camp for troubled boys has new owner

OLDTOWN (AP) A western Maryland camp for troubled boys is growing a year after it reopened as a private, religious boarding school.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the Mennonite-affiliated Allegany Boys Camp near Oldtown has 17 residents, compared with three last year.

The rustic, 300-acre site is overseen by operators of the Bald Eagle Boys Camp in Mill Hall, Pa., while a separate board seeks nonprofit certification for the Maryland property.

The camp was previously run by Three Springs New Dominion as a residential treatment center under the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The Alabama-based group closed it 2008 amid complaints from neighbors about security lapses.

The new owners say they offer up to 18 months of therapeutic, faith-based camping for boys aged 9 to 16.

Prince Georges County students head back to class

UPPER MARLBORO (AP) Public school students in Prince Georges County are heading back to class and speed cameras in school zones ar! e back in operation.

County schools will be opening their doors again on Monday, and to keep children safe the county will activate 56 cameras. The county also plans to add another 16 cameras in October.

According to AAA, the Prince Georges county police department issued about 349,230 tickets from automated cameras in school zones during the 2011-2012 school year. They cost the violator $40 each and netted the county more than $5 million.

2 men, 1 teen injured in shooting in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) Authorities say two adults and one juvenile have been injured in a shooting the Druids Hill neighborhood in Baltimore.

Police were called to the area about 11:15 p.m. Sunday for reports of gunfire and found the three victims. Authorities later determined that the shootings had occurred in the 400 block of Bloom Avenue.

All three victims were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

No further information was immediately available.

Motorcyclist killed in Prince Georges County

UPPER MARLBORO (AP) Prince Georges County police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old motorcyclist near downtown Upper Marlboro over the weekend.

Police spokesman Cpl. Larry Johnson says the man has not been identified because authorities are still working to notify his family.

Johnson tells The Washington Post that preliminary findings show that the motorcycle collided with a car on Brown Station Road about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, and the motorcyclist later died.

Man falls 60 feet in abandoned plant in Dundalk

DUNDAL (AP) A Baltimore County fire official says a 19-year-old man fell about 60 feet from a catwalk in an abandoned plant in Dundalk over the weekend.

Fire spokesman Capt. C. Ross Cooke tells The Baltimore Sun that emergency crews were called to the old Joseph E. Seagram & Sons bottling plant in the 7100 block of Sollers Point Road about 3:50 p.m. Sunday by the mans friend! .

T! he man was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore in critical condition.

Cooke says it appeared the catwalk gave way as the men were walking along it.

He says he did not know why the men were in the plant.

Prince Georges Co. police shoot man in Oxon Hill

OXON HILL (AP) Officials say a Prince Georges County police officer has shot a man following a confrontation in Oxon Hill.

Police were called to the 5100 block of Woodland Boulevard, near Barnaby Lane, about 10 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a suspicious person in the area. Arriving officers found a man who appeared to be covered in blood.

Police say the man tried to fight with officers, and an officer used a Taser on him. Officials say the man then allegedly threatened to kill one or more officers. The man was shot by an officer and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Police believe the man may have been high on PCP.
