Palin chosen for powerful political ideology: Broomfield

Renowned documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield brought his latest feature documentary Sarah Palin: You Betcha! to Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) 2011 for its Middle East and North Africa premiere yesterday.Broomfield is acclaimed for his portraits of people as diverse as Tupac Shakur and Margaret Thatcher. So why did he choose the former Republican presidential candidate? Sarah Palin, like Margaret Thatcher, represents a political ideology that is quite powerful and that were going to be dealing for some time, he said.Dogmatic, fundamentalist beliefs have permeated the Tea Party movement, he continued. Its the end of an era of the pragmatic politics that you expect in a democracy, where you debate ideas and the most commonsense plan is adopted. That is gone. They have a package of ideas and Sarah Palin is part of it.Broomfields quest for the real Palin involved battling the icy snows of Alaska in mid-winter as he interviewed the friends, family and Republican colleagues who gave their heart, soul and belief, to the charismatic ex-hockey mum-turned-American politician.People in Palins hometown became increasingly withdrawn, the longer Broomfield and his small team stayed there. He compared the filmmaking process in Alaska to pulling teeth from one end to the other. However, some of Palins fellow Alaskans eventually cracked: When people did eventually talk, the only reason they did is because they were worried. If she did win, they didnt want to have stood by and done nothing.
