Sarah Palin's Chick-fil-A Visit Causes Outrage and Controversy
On her way to the airport from addressing a rally in support of Texas senatorial candidate Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin publicly stopped by a Texas Chick-fil-A for a chicken sandwich with sides of anti political correctness and controversy
The resulting outrage and snark proves, once again, Palin's power to annoy.
"Stupid Girls" on CNN
Newsbusters reports that a CNN story on the visit used a song called "Stupid Girls" as bumper music. CNN maintains that the host, Randi Kaye, had no input into what music is played on particular segments, that being reserved to someone on the production staff. As Hot Air suggests, it would seem that Palin is owed an apology by the unknown production staffer as well as corporate CNN.
Twitter explodes with consternation
Twitchy, the site that tracks tweets about burning political issues, put up a page about the Twitter reaction to Palin's visit to Chick-fil-A. Many of the tweets were angry, much of them obscene, and nearly all were filled with loathing for Palin personally. One tweet which was free of profane language, said, "Sarah Palin visits chick fil-a because she supports death panels for gay marriages-" Another tweet suggested that one of Palin's children was probably a closeted gay who will shortly come out of the closet. Legal Insurrection also noted a number of angry and obscene tweets concerning Palin's choice of where to buy a chicken sandwich. But Twitchy and Legal Insurrecti! on suggests that the angry reaction to Palin's dinner had more to do with misogyny than to a principled disagreement over the validity of same-sex marriage.
Think Progress attacks Palin's grandson
An article on the visit in Think Progress noted that Palin's 3-year-old grandson, Tripp, uttered a word that while bleeped out on an episode of her daughter Bristol's reality show, was widely thought to be an obscene insult referring to gay people. The piece did note that Palin denied being anti-gay but instead hewing to what she believes to be the traditional view of marriage being between one man and one woman.
The UK Daily Mail adds some snark
In a comprehensive story on the controversy, the UK Daily Mail contains the phrase, "She Just Couldn't Help It," the implication that Palin is attracted to controversy for its own sake. The article also refers to her as a "former Christian politician," somewhat inaccurately because Palin is still a believing Christian and is still very active in politics.
The Houston Chronicle compares Palin to George Wallace
Geoff Berg, writing in the Houston Chronicle, compared Palin's visit to Chick-fil-A to Alabama Gov. George Wallace's 1963 "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" inaugural address. Berg did not cite where Palin suggested that gays should be segregated from straights in schools or in public accommodations such as public bathrooms or drinking fountains or where she suggested they should be forced to sit at the back of the bus, how! ever.
